Looking for Magic; Finding Miracles

Sometimes we get the idea that miracles are instantaneous, and sometimes they are. But just as often, they take time.

A new baby is a miracle—but it must grow and mature for nine months before it’s ready to be revealed. A broken bone, that knits itself back together in six weeks is  a miracle. And a person controlled by an addiction that finds true freedom is also a miracle, even when that miracle takes months, years, or even decades to unfold.

Merriam Webster dictionary defines a miracle as an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs. If that’s true, our every day is a miracle. Our heart beats, our lungs breathe, our eyes blink — and not one of those can be done without divine intervention. People and opportunities  wander across our path and end up changing the course of our lives.  Those are miracles, because God is the one that orchestrates those unlikely situations. Even sanctification is a miracle. Even though it’s a lifelong process, how could we ever become more Christ-like without God’s touch?

So often we’re looking for that instant magic. A poof, a little smoke and voila, the thing we wanted appears. At least that’s what we hope. And we’re so, so disappointed when it doesn’t work out that way.

What we really need are eyes to see the myriad of miracles that are already swirling around us every day. These things, created especially for us by our loving heavenly father, are what will bring true satisfaction to our souls.

“He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.” — Job 5:9
