The Dawning of Freedom

Here in Washington State, this time of the year seems to have an extra dose of darkness. Not only are we nearing the shortest day of the  year—the one with the least daylight hours—but the rain clouds are perpetually blocking out most of the light we could still be enjoying. It’s cold, dark . . . and just plain dank. In the midst of the dreariness, it’s important that we not lose sight of the fact that we have access to a greater light, one that has no shadow of turning.

We need light to live and grow.

Science tells us that all living things require light to stay alive and develop properly. Many studies have been done with both humans and animals to show the profound effects of light deprivation. Without sufficient light, the hormones that run our bodies and regulate our natural sleep and activity patterns are compromised, and our most basic food chain is endangered.

But it is not only our bodies that need light. Our spirits also require light to flourish. In John 8, Jesus proclaims “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus alone provides the light that our spirit needs to thrive.

Unfortunately, the world of addiction is full of darkness. Little by little it eclipses the effects and benefits of Christ’s light in our lives. 2nd Corinthians 11:14 says Satan masquerades as an angel of light but, in truth, he is the prince of darkness. When we are enticed by his offerings, we find ourselves moving further and further from the “light of life.”

Even though a part of us still yearns for the light, the enemy of our souls convinces us that we must remain in the shadows so our evil deeds will not be exposed (John 3:19-20). The darkness blinds us to the fact that the source of this directive is none other than the father of lies.

The glorious truth is that Christ’s light will not condemn us. In fact, the exact opposite is true. As we let His light into the dark places of our heart, we will find freedom and new life.

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2
