The Two Roads of Pain

Those struggling with compulsive sexual behaviors have only two choices and both of them involve pain:

1. We can continue acting out with the realization that using sex to meet our deep internal needs leads to increasingly destructive behavior. Moreover, it progressively damages our ability to function in personal relationships and grow spiritually in our relationship with God. The downward spiral is not an easy road.

2. We can allow Jesus to help us face our painful memories, fears of rejection and core sinful beliefs and free us from their grip. This is not an easy road either. It’s scary not knowing what will be around the next bend.

Two roads. Neither of them easy, but one leads to destruction and one leads to freedom. True change can only happen when the pain and consequences of continuing on in the addiction become greater than the fear of leaving the road we know so well and embarking on a different path— the journey to freedom.

In Romans 6:14 Paul assures us “For sin shall not be your master. because you are not under law, but under grace.” God wants to deliver us from addiction’s grip, but he will not force us to accept his gift of a “life more abundant.” It’s ours to choose or reject.

“This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice and hold fast to him.” Deuteronomy 30:19-20
