The other day I had “one of those days.” It didn’t start out well and it seemed to get worse and worse as the day progressed. Things broke. Interruptions happened. Everything I tried to do took twice as long as it should have.
Numerous times during the day it crossed my mind that I should stop and pray but, instead, I just kept trying to push through. By the end of the day I was exhausted and full of anxiety. It was then, and only then, that I finally gave up and went to God, knowing full well that I had screwed up royally by willfully ignoring His calls to me throughout the day. How much different would the day have been if I had just stopped, resolved the issues with God’s help and gotten back on track? Instead, I chose to have a rotten day by doing it “my way.”
I was struck by the fact that this scenario is so similar to the ones experienced by those having a difficult time in recovery. For them, as well as me, putting off doing the right thing takes us to a place of discouragement and defeat. Procrastination gets us in trouble every time.
How many times have you slipped into fantasy or inappropriate thoughts and then told yourself it was “no big deal”? How many times have you felt the tug to call someone to talk about the cravings you were having, but didn’t? How many times have you kept secrets or ignored situations that were screaming for resolution? And, most importantly, how many times have you ended up doing the very thing you were never going to do again, just because you didn’t take care of something that your heart KNEW you needed to do?
Yep! We’ve all been there. That’s what procrastination does for us. It keeps us sliding, sliding, sliding, further and further away from where and who we really want to be.
Today we have a choice. We can ride that slide yet again . . . or we can heed that still small voice of God’s direction within us. Which we will choose is totally up to us.
