Ever Closer

“I may not be there yet, but I’m closer than I was yesterday.” —Natalia Campbell

It’s easy to get weary of recovery. Stretching, risking, praying, analyzing, trying. It’s exhausting at times. Sometimes we wonder if we’re making any progress at all—especially when we have a slip or find ourselves falling into old patterns of thinking. We’re tempted to believe that nothing has changed—that we’re still the same as we always were.

But it isn’t true. We will never be who we were yesterday. A time of renewed struggle doesn’t take away the things we’ve learned, the awarenesses we’ve had, or the work that God has done in our lives. We are changing. Sometimes it’s quick and exciting, other times it is painfully slow, but we are changing. As long as we don’t give up we will get there. And today . . . today we are one step closer than we were yesterday.

“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” — James 1:4 (NIV)
