Nothing goes away until it’s resolved. If we haven’t come to terms with our old resentments, old hurts and old beliefs, it doesn’t matter how hard we try to push them out of our minds, they are still there festering inside us. They aren’t “in the past”. Whether we realize it or not, they are still affecting us and the way we think and react to things each and every day.
To finally put them to rest, we need to find the source of the issue and let God rewrite the beliefs that the situation or encounter created. Many people are reluctant to look into their past. Some are terrified about what horrible dark secret they might find there. Others are afraid that taking even a peek might bring them decidedly more pain. Many have happy memories of their younger days and don’t want to end up angry and blaming their parents or another loved one for all their problems.
When we dig around in our past, it is not to find someone to blame. It is to determine what feelings and beliefs we took away from significant situations and events in our lives. Knowing this allows us to resolve the unresolved—to grieve, to forgive, to repent, to realize the lies we have believed—so we can to finally be free of their effects and truly move on with our lives. We become a more contented person, more at peace in our own skin and more able to have the deep relationships that support and encourage us. Unencumbered, we can finally become the person we were created to be.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”—John 8:32 (NIV)
