Clean and Refreshed

Have you ever had one of those days when some song from your past invades your mind and won’t let go? Today was one of those days for me. As I looked out at the gray skies and drizzle, an old Bill Gaither song that I haven’t heard in at least 30 years popped into my mind and decided to take up residence. It’s been playing over and over in there ever since.

I know this is going to date me . . . but I’m pretty sure this song was first popular in the late 1970’s when I was a very young Christian. Many of you are probably too young to remember it . . . but this is how the chorus went:

“It’s beginning to rain, hear the voice of the Father saying, ‘whosoever will come drink of this water. I have promised to pour my spirit out on your sons and your daughters.’ If you’re thirsty and dry, look up to the sky, it’s beginning to rain.”

Hearing it again reminded me how often the Bible talks about water. Water for cleansing. Water for refreshing. Life-giving water. It also reminds me of God’s provision. No matter what you need today—God can provide it. If you’re feeling dry . . . he can quench your thirst. If you’re feeling dirty .  . .  he can cleanse you. If you’re feeling hardened by life . . . he can soften you. The living water of the Holy Spirit is there to refresh us and meet our deepest needs—whatever they may be. All that is asked of us is to be a “whosever” that is willing to come to him. If we’re willing, we can have the same fresh start and sweet renewing that he promised to the Israelites thousands of years ago:

“I will sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new Spirit in you. I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”—Ezekiel 36:25-26.
