Busy, Busy, Busy

Does anybody remember the 60’s song, “Dizzy” recorded by Tommy Roe? I know it’s so old you practically need a time machine to find it, but I’m told it was also used in the sound track for the 2005 film “The Sandlot 2.”. Does that help any?

If not, I guess it doesn’t really matter whether you know the song or not. The opening line goes like this:

“Dizzy . . . I’m so dizzy my head is spinning. Like a whirlpool it never ends.”

Well, I was just thinking earlier today, if they would just replace the word “dizzy” with “busy,” this could become the personal theme song of just about everyone I know.

BUSYNESS IS NOT OUR FRIEND

More and more I am seeing busyness as the enemy of our souls. It suffocates us and takes away our ability to pay attention to the really important things we need to do to stay grounded and healthy.

How often do we feel disconnected and alone because everyone we know is too busy to get together?

How often do we eat fast food, empty calories, or nothing, because we just don’t have time to make ourselves something healthy.

How many times do we skip exercising or our quiet time, or relaxation because we’ve got “places to go and people to see?”

How long has it been since you had a really good night’s sleep? How many of us are staying up later and later and getting up earlier and earlier to make all our busyness fit in?

We’re burning the candle at both ends, trying to catch up with ourselves, get the job done AND make it look like it was “no sweat”.

Then we wonder why we don’t feel well, we’re constantly on edge and repeatedly returning to unwanted behaviors. Hmmm . . .

“Come to me, all  you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” —Matthew 11:28-29
