Recovery can feel like a lonely road at times. As you plod along, it’s easy to start believing that you are somehow different than everyone else.
But. . .you are not unique. Your struggle is not unique. Your thoughts are not unique. Your failings are not unique. Your fears are not unique. The Bible says there is NOTHING new under the sun. Generations before have been exactly where you are, thinking exactly the same things and experiencing exactly the same frustrations. You are not the only one. In spite of what the enemy whispers, you are not uniquely sinful or unusually defective. Others have been there. Others ARE there now. You are not alone.
At first that may seem a bit hopeless . . . a cycle of pain and destruction flowing down through the years. But, there’s another side to it. It’s not only the difficulties that aren’t new. The solutions, the grace, the road to freedom, they are not new either. You are not having to carve out a new path. This road to healing is well worn. God has walked with many others down this difficult highway.
All of them have felt hopeless at times. They have questioned whether they have what it takes. They, too, are haunted by the nagging feeling that they are different than everyone else. Most of them travel so quietly, that we don’t even realize they are with us on this journey . . . but they (and God) are here. WE are not alone!
“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say “Look! There is something new”? It was here before time. —Ecclesiastes 1:9-10
