The Victim Trap

We have two choices in this life. No matter what life hands us, we can choose to be responsible or we can choose to sit back and be a victim.

Responsible adults choose to move forward—to surrender—to persevere—to ask God to provide the power and the wisdom they need to change, grow, and heal. If this is our choice, we refuse to stay where we are and seek higher ground and a better way.

But, there is another path we can take. Sometimes we don’t realize that we’ve actually made the choice to become a victim. We think of it more as a curse that was put on us—something awful that sought us out and pinpointed us for a despicable life. Instead of reaching out and looking toward God and others for direction and help, we convince ourselves that we can do nothing. We complain, we blame others for our plight, we feel sorry for ourselves. The problem is, the more we let ourselves wallow in helplessness and despair, the less we can see any other option. Being a victim becomes a way of life and a trap.

The enemy seeks to destroy us and what better way could there be than to blind us to the help and options that are available. Once we are fully bound by his lies of hopelessness, our soul begins to die. But it is not too late.

God does not give up on us. He wants to open our blinded eyes and free us from the bondage and darkness of the enemy. All we have to do is open the door of our life and invite him in to heal and restore.

“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.” —Isaiah 42:6-7
