A few months ago we first mentioned the book I’ve been writing: Now Choose Life! — One Man’s Journey Out of the Grip of Pornography. After a significant number of set-backs, I’m happy to say that we’re finally making good progress and, if all continues to go as planned, the book should be available on Amazon sometime next month! (More on that later.)
You might be wondering why we took on the grueling task of writing this book, when there are already so many books that have been published about sexual addiction.
The answer is simple. Bruce and I are big proponents of the idea that “fore-warned is fore-armed.” We believe that if you know about something before it happens you can be prepared for it. We have seen too many recovery efforts de-railed because nobody told the struggler that it could be a lengthy process with lots of ups and downs and sticky patches. Without knowing what to expect, they gave up on recovery (and themselves) long before they ever tasted freedom.
Unfortunately, most books make recovery sound deceptively simple. “It’s lust. It’s sin. It’s not good. Now stop it” or “All you have to do is pray enough, trust enough, learn enough, resist enough and voila! . . . problem solved.” Although there are snippets of truth in all those thoughts, they are not the whole truth and they do not properly prepare someone for the recovery journey.
In our book we take a more linear approach. Through a unique balance of personal testimony, practical information and spiritual truth, we seek to instill hope, reduce shame, and provide a realistic idea of the process of healing from sexual addiction.
A series of things happened in Bruce’s life, and the lives of all of you who struggle with this issue that made you particularly vulnerable to this problem. There were things that changed the way you thought and reacted to life. There were reasons that the addiction took hold and steps you can take to discover what’s fueling the need to continue. Bruce’s story may help you understand your own story. And that understanding will bring you closer, too . . . closer to the freedom that you seek.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32

November 14, 2015After a long period of anetxiy and frustration, seems like forever, we needed to turn to someone else that had far more experience than we thought we had. We had already been meeting with a mental health councilor but felt we needed more help and support. We met with Todd Barlow who offered a program that gave up hope and support outside the confines of traditional addiction treatment. Seven years ago we were facing a living hell and we needed to do something. The journey may have seemed long, but we never felt alone and contact either initated by us or Todd and his staff was frequent and very supportive. The process had begun.
