Let’s get honest with ourselves. Life will never be perfect. We will never be perfect. Our recovery will never be perfect.
And yet . . . deep down we still expect perfection, from ourselves, from others and from the situations that we’re in. As long as we hold on to that standard it will keep us stuck.
The quest for perfection creates:
- Self-sabotaging SHAME when we cannot attain or maintain a perfect recovery, a perfect record, a perfect look, a perfect attitude.
- Paralyzing PROCRASTINATION as we insist on waiting for the perfect time to lose weight, get married, start recovery, or make that change.
- Defeating EXCUSES that prevent us from forging toward our goals
- Misplaced ANGER about the people and situations that aren’t cooperating with our vision of how things need to be.
Real progress can only happen when we finally give up looking for perfection and start focusing on moving forward in spite of all the imperfection we see.
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it is about learning to dance in the rain.” — Vivian Green
