A Sure-fire Strategy

As a rule, humans are creatures of habit. Most of us sit in the same pew each week, we go to the same restaurants, we stick with what we know and are comfortable with—even if it no longer meets our needs. But . . .

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you always get what  you’ve always gotten.”

Doing something different comes with risks . . . and risks are scary.

What if we can’t do it? What if we make a fool of ourselves? What if we fail miserably? What if we end up in a worse place than we were before? What if . . . what if . . . what if?

Gaining freedom from any type of addiction requires that we take risks. We need to learn how to handle stress, or anger, or fear differently. We need to resolve issues that we have spent a lifetime avoiding. We need to get out of our comfort zone and learn to trust God and others, instead of using our addiction to keep us feeling safe and normal. And, because it is scary any time we seek to do something new, we need to let others rally around us and support us as we begin to take those risks.

The truth is, if you’re not feeling a little bit of apprehension right now, you’ve slipped back into that “comfortable” place—the place of stuckness.

What small risk can you take TODAY that will help you move (even if it’s a baby step) toward the freedom, peace and more satisfying life you desire? Even taking just one risk a day will put you 365 steps closer to your goals by this time, next year.

“But now, this is what the LORD says . . . Forget the things that happened in the past. Do not keep thinking about them. I am about to do something new. It is beginning to happen even now. Don’t you see it coming? I am going to make a way for you to go through the desert. I will make streams of water in the dry and empty land.”  — Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)
