Warding Off Relapses

I heard some interesting advice today that, if taken seriously, has the potential to completely change our lives”

“Focus on what you DO have and NOT on what you don’t”

At first it doesn’t sound like such a big deal. But the more you think about it, the more profound this simple directive becomes. If we fill our minds with thoughts of what we don’t have, we will quickly move toward jealously and resentment and that is a HUGE deal. Alcoholics Anonymous describes resentment as a “luxury that an addict can ill afford.” Almost without exception, it will lead us back to our addiction—whatever that may be. Simply put, Resentment=Relapse.

But, if we choose to push aside those longings for things we do not have, and focus instead on what we already DO have, it is impossible for resentment to grow. Our hearts and minds become fertile ground where gratitude, humbleness and satisfaction can flourish.

Instead of being angry and depressed, we become full of joy and thankfulness. We begin to have eyes for all the blessings that God has bestowed upon us. We start to understand and feel how much he loves us. In a way Gratitude=God, as we become more and more aware of his hand in and on our lives.

As that relationship grows, so will our trust in him and his provision. We don’t need our old ways of “coping” any more. We don’t feel alone or unworthy.

A simple change of focus = amazing results!
