Many people wish to serve God – but only in an advisory capacity.— Author Unknown
Most of the time I’m a pretty capable person. I have common sense and I can figure things out. Maybe you’re that kind of person too. We’ve been gifted with a brain that, at least the majority of the time, works pretty well. What a blessing! But, as with any of the gifts we’ve been given, it’s easy to slip into trusting them—more than God—to get through life.
How many times do our prayers consist of solely asking God to work out something in the way WE perceive is right? Or, even worse, how often do we forget to even stop and ask God about the struggles in life, because we decide we know what needs to happen and we just keep pushing until we make it a reality? We may be making it through that way . . . but it’s a heavy load. Being “in charge” feels safe because we mistakenly believe we’re controlling everything, but it is exhausting—a needless exhaustion.
When we surrender and let God actually be in charge of directing our life, that burden lightens. The more we get to know God—through reading the Bible, prayer, learning from mature Christians, and even just sitting in His presence—the more we will be able to trust him. And the more we are able to let him control our lives, the more we will see solutions and opportunities we never thought possible unfold. No matter how amazing our brain is—God is more amazing.
Maybe your gifts are different. Maybe you have a great sense of humor, the ability to make lots of money, good-looks, an effervescent personality, but no matter what it is, it won’t be enough to sustain you through the most difficult challenges of life. We need to look outside ourselves for the wisdom, protection, provision and direction that God wants to provide.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”—Proverbs 3:5-6
