If You Lack Understanding How Can You Succeed?

Understanding is essential to any effort. You can’t successfully fight an unknown enemy, or reach an undefined goal. It’s just impossible. We need to know what we’re up against to be able to determine the next step, or define the tools we’ll need to proceed.

The same is true when we’re dealing with our internal being. One of the hardest things we have to do is to attach words to our emotions, struggles and authentic needs. But, until we do, we’ll be unable to communicate to others what we are feeling, or gain any understanding of where to go from here.

This post is the first in our “Keys to Success” series. Once a month we’ll be using this space to review one of the essential components that have been proven to be an important key in addiction recovery. We’ll also be including some links to a few older posts relating to each topic that you may have missed or might benefit from reviewing.

It only makes sense to begin this series with an important first step in addiction recovery—understanding the sexual addiction struggle and what causes it. Knowledge does not, in itself, heal us, but without a basic understanding of the whats and hows of addiction—and especially THIS addiction—we can easily be overwhelmed by denial, fear, shame, and even self-loathing. All of these roads lead to hopelessness and cheat us out of the freedom that could be ours. We will begin to discover the road OUT of addiction by remaining open and teachable.

I’ve selected three blog posts, that embody the most basic truths about sexual addiction:

What Exactly Is Sexual Addiction?

Is It Really an Addiction?

Is It a Habit or a Disease?

It doesn’t matter whether the information is new or review, there is no doubt that cultivating the habit of continuously gaining and retaining a deeper understanding of the truth will help keep you moving toward freedom.

“Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”  — John 8:32 (NIV)
