Fix Your Eyes

Are you discouraged today? I am.

Sometimes life’s battles seem never-ending. We push forward only to slide back. We run toward open doors only to have them slam in our face. We get weary. We feel like giving up.

And yet, the Bible says “you need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised” (Hebrews 10:35). God has promised us so much—freedom, peace, success, abundant blessings, eternal life, and tons more—but to receive them we must persevere. Dictionary.com defines perseverance as a “steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc. Especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles or discouragement.”

We can’t stop. We can’t give up . . . no matter how bleak it seems. It makes me smile (just a little) when I think of the succinct way Winston Churchill summed it up when he said “If you are going through hell, KEEP GOING.”

Think about it. If we give up now, we are stuck with more of the same. The same situation. The same pain. The same frustration. The same shame. Our only hope for something different is persistence—pushing forward, with one eye on our goal and the other on our God. He’s the one that gives us the strength, the courage, the wisdom we need to move forward toward something better.

“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. do not turn  to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.”—Proverbs 4:25-27
